I wish that computer science departments and technology companies would think about talent that way colleges think about football teams. They go out and find the talent. They have recruiters out there looking for it.

We are so detached from what is happening in the rest of the world, and I think a lot of that has to do with what we see on our social media feeds

I think we're really in our silos. We think that whatever is in our Instagram feed is what life looks like, and it's not the case. I think it's making us less compassionate and making us less able to love.

Most of these cultures have been created with all white and Asian men, and we have to ask ourselves, can these big technology companies actually change and welcome women?

80% of all venture capital goes to three states: 50% of it goes to California and 60% of that goes just to Northern California... and most of it goes to white guys.

Less than 25% of the tech workforce is female (to add: less <5% of the top level is made up of women and people of color)

70% of low-income families are run by single breadwinners, which are women and often women of color. When they lose their job, the entire family suffers.

I started Girls Who Code because I wanted to get to gender parity in the workforce. And what we forget about women in coding and women in engineering is we were almost at parity in the 1980s. In the 1980s, 37% of the technology workforce was female ... When I started Girls Who Code, it was was 18, and now we've slowly climbed to 22.

Maybe culture only happens from inception and you have to start a company out with a diverse team and build a culture where you aim have diverse talent. That means that we have to support women, people of color, and underserved groups to start their own companies.

I still think, as women, we hold ourselves back, because we've been raised to be perfectionists
